Diabetes Mellitus, a metabolic disorder is increasing by incidence and prevalence like a pandemic disease throughout the globe including Bangladesh. At present, millions of peoples are diagnosed to have Diabetes in our country. This condition, not only results in abnormal carbohydrates metabolism, but also is responsible for derangement of metabolism of other nutrients (including fat, protein, vitamin and electrolytes all over the body) and may lead to multi-system disorders. So, to provide effective treatment to this patient, a country-wide comprehensive system is needed which is yet to be established. However, since 1956, “Bangladesh Diabetes Somity (BADAS)”, the association with primary aim to help diabetic patients, through its unique program, is trying to help these patients throughout the country by providing treatment of diabetes and other ailments of them from its satellite centers. These services are centered around its main campus BIRDEM (Bangladesh Institute of Research & Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders), situated at Shahbagh, Dhaka which is unique worldwide for its highest number of registered diabetic patients and huge Out-Patient turnover. This institution has also 700 bed In-Patient service hospital at its Campus-1 & 2, both of which are equipped with all modern machinery and up-to-date facilities to provide services to patients of almost all disciplines including Diabetes. Through its Academy, BIRDEM, as a private institute, conducts the highest number of post-graduate medical courses in different subjects and is also being involved in various research activities of this institution as well as in co-operations with other national and international agencies and organizations.
BIRDEM, through its OPD, provides services to patients of various disciplines including Diet & Nutrition, Dentistry, Dermatology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Psychiatry and Social Welfare. Facilities for both out-patient and in-patient patients of both medicine and surgery including their allied branches are also available. Notable medical allied departments are Endocrinology and Metabolism, Acute/Emergency Medicine, Gastrointestinal Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Disorders (GHPD), Nephrology including Dialysis, Neurology, Critical Care Medicine (CCM), Cardiology and Respiratory Medicine. In addition to modern facilities for General surgical patients, the institute is well reputed for its high-quality services to patients of Ophthalmology, ENT & Head Neck Surgery, Urology, Hepatobiliary surgery, Orthopedic Surgery and Plastic Surgery including Special foot-care management. Gynecology & Obstetrics and Pediatrics department are established in BIRDEM-2 Hospital at Segunbagicha (Mohila and Shishu hospital) with modern facilities for both diabetic and no-diabetic subjects with full-fledged SCABU and PICU services.
To foster standard care for all patients, BIRDEM set up the world-class laboratories and Radiology & Imaging department with latest technologies for investigation at its main campus at BIRDEM -1.
In the era of digitalization, BIRDEM, at its both campuses (1& 2), under the supervision of Information Management Unit, is maintaining BADAS-computerized Patients Billing Systems, store inventory and procurement management system, fixed assets management system and finance and account management system. Automation of Computerized laboratory management system (Microbiology, Histopathology, Immunology, Endocrinology, Transfusion Medicine, Radiology) and e-Health (Electronic Health) Management are in practice now.
BIRDEM General Hospital at its both units, organized “Specialist Chamber Complex” and through the institutional practice of its own and visiting Consultants have organized and are maintaining specialist consultation service from 3 PM to 8 PM in addition to its usual OPD services. Through this system, services are provided at a reasonable cost to patients from any source of medical and surgical problems. The specialist services at present functioning are for Diabetes and Hormone, Gastroenterology, Otolaryngology, Orthopedics, Urology, Medicine, Surgery, Cardiology, Kidney Diseases, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Clinical Psychology and Nutrition etc. The hospital renovated it’s all operation theatres with modern facilities and advanced necessary equipment’s to perform all sorts of operation.
In addition to provide medical and other services to diabetic and other patients, Diabetic Association of Bangladesh, DAB extended its program to establish skilled manpower in the country for serving patients of Endocrinology & Diabetes as well as for other types of patients and to enrich teaching professionals in medical institutions at home and abroad, established BIRDEM Academy in 1986. At present, BIRDEM academy is conducting 19 postgraduate courses in the form of MD, MS, M Phil, Diplomas and PhD under Dhaka University (DU) and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). BIRDEM General Hospital is also recognized for full-time training for a number of FCPS courses of Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS). This institute is a recognized center for conducting examination of different courses and degrees of DU, BSMMU and BCPS. In BIRDEM, a number of basic and advanced researches are being conducted as part of different academic courses and also to find the answer to many contemporary problems and also to meet the need of medical professional and others.
