 Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is a key component of diabetes management. MNT is defined as a nutrition-based treatment provided by a qualified dietitian/ nutritionist. It includes nutritional assessment as well as therapeutic counseling services to help manage diabetes and related complications and to prevent the severity of disease oriented consequences. This ensures individual’s wealthy health.

Department of Diet and Nutrition, BIRDEM is the pioneer of Clinical Nutrition sector in Bangladesh since 1973 to till date where we provide different activities; such as:

1. OPD ( Outpatient Department ) , room no 247 ( 1st floor )
2. IPD   ( Inpatient[Hospitalized] Department ) , room no 615 ( 5th  floor )
3. OPD & IPD , BIRDEM-2 , room no 227 ( 1st floor )

OPD (Outpatient Department), room no 247 (1st floor)

• Provides Dietary advised with necessary counseling for each newly diagnosed Diabetic person at the first day of enlistment on the basis of medical and dietary history in both morning and evening shift.
• Conducting “group patient education class” for all newly diagnosed Diabetic people with their family member at the first day of enlistment about the basic management of Diabetes and prevention of complications of the disease.
• Provides individual, modified and updated Dietary advice on the basis of different disease and related reports of all patients referred from different department of BIRDEM every day.
• Maintain the Dietary follow-up of all patients time to time as per their conditions demand.

 

IPD   (Inpatient [Hospitalized] Department), room no 615 (5th floor)

• Prepare the appropriate diet for hospitalized patient in BIRDEM on the basis of their disease conditions, reports, feeding pattern (such as: Oral/ Enteral / N-G feeding etc.), timing of meal, individual amount and require energy expenditure and nutrient requirement every day.
• Supervising Hospital kitchen branch to prepare and serve customized diet for each hospitalized patient in five time with additional meal per day.
• Monitoring the recommendation of dietary changes from the physician, and providing that modified diet for any patient in IPD.
• Collecting bedside information on the choice of food of all hospitalized patients and providing Diet chart to follow at home before the time of discharge on the basis of current reports and their health conditions.

Others activity

• For the first time in BIRDEM as well as in Bangladesh Department of Diet & Nutrition of BIRDEM under supervision  of  BIRDEM Academy has introduced a six months Internship course for the post graduate students completed MS/MSc in Food and Nutrition Science  .
• To provide  nutrition based training to  students and officials from different educational Intuitions, Universities, Hospitals, NGOs , INGOs and other intuitions in home and abroad in each year.
• To do research on Nutrition.
• To organized and attend various workshops, seminars, symposiums and conferences to develop the knowledge based on nutrition at home and abroad each year. 
• Organize regional workshop to provide and update nutrition based training to Nutrition officers, Health educators, Nurses and other employee who related to Dietary activates in affiliated associations of Bangladesh Diabetes Association.
• To work with the different organizations of Bangladesh Govt. on behalf of BIRDEM Hospital for various types of nutritional development, planning and activities.
• Special patient services are provided as ‘Nutrition Consultant ‘at the “Specialist Chamber Complex” BIRDEM.
